Returning from Injury and Illness
Why is it important?
Returning from injury and illness the RIGHT way is so important. As hard as it may be for the athlete, PATIENCE reduces the risk of re-injury.
Every sport is different and each have specific return to play policies and procedures, however many of these are very similar in nature, especially for some of the more common injuries such as a sprained ankle.
These return to play policies and procedures should be followed by sporting clubs in order to promote player safety and wellbeing. Injuries that are not managed appropriately can cause the player further pain and discomfort. On the other hand, if a player has returned to the field of play too early without proper injury management and advice, this can lead to a serious injury or worse.
Sports Trainers are expected to operate in accordance with their qualification and if in doubt, seek further assistance from higher qualified personnel including doctors, physiotherapists and paramedics.
Remember that all relevant injury paperwork needs to be completed for all players who are assisted from the field or managed by a sports trainer, first aider or any other medical personnel.
Injury Report Form
Once a decision has been made for a player not to return to the field of play, the player will not return to training or play any further games until medical clearance is made by a doctor and paperwork has been filed with the Club.
Below are the Concussion Return to Play Guidelines that SASMA recommend should be utilised by all sporting clubs.
